We Know Westchester Soil Conditions

Union Landscaping and Hardscape S Corp has been installing pavers throughout Westchester for years. We understand how local soil behaves through the seasons and what it takes to build a foundation that won’t shift or settle.

You won’t find us cutting corners on base preparation or using subpar materials. We work with established suppliers and use the same installation methods on every project, whether it’s a small walkway or a large commercial parking area.

Our reputation in Westchester comes from projects that still look great years later. We’re licensed, insured, and we stand behind our work with real warranties that mean something.

Paver Installation Process

How We Install Pavers Right

First, we excavate to the proper depth and grade for drainage. This isn’t negotiable – poor base preparation kills paver projects faster than anything else. We remove all organic material and compact the subgrade properly.

Next comes the base layer – crushed stone that’s leveled, graded, and compacted in lifts. Then we install edge restraints to keep everything locked in place. The sand leveling course goes on next, screeded to exact specifications.

Pavers get installed in the pattern you chose, with proper joint spacing throughout. We compact everything with a plate compactor, sweep in joint sand, and compact again. The final step is cleaning and sealing if you opted for that protection.

How long do properly installed pavers last in Westchester?

Quality pavers installed with proper base preparation typically last 25-30 years or more in Westchester’s climate. The key is adequate excavation depth and proper compaction of the base materials. Pavers themselves are extremely durable – it’s poor installation that causes premature failure. We see 20-year-old installations we did that still look excellent because we don’t cut corners on the foundation work that you can’t see.
Pavers handle freeze-thaw cycles much better than concrete in North Carolina. When concrete cracks, you’re looking at expensive repairs or replacement. Individual pavers can be replaced if damaged, and the surface actually gets more stable over time as everything settles together. Pavers also offer better traction in wet conditions and don’t show oil stains as readily as concrete surfaces do.
Professional installation typically costs 40-60% more upfront than DIY materials alone, but DIY failures are expensive to fix properly. Most homeowners underestimate the excavation work and don’t have access to proper compaction equipment. When DIY paver projects fail within 2-3 years, you end up paying for professional installation anyway, plus removal of the failed work. Factor in tool rental and your time, and professional installation usually makes financial sense.
Concrete pavers and natural stone both perform well here when installed properly. Concrete pavers offer more color and pattern options and are typically more budget-friendly. Natural stone costs more but provides a premium look and tends to appreciate in value over time. Both handle our freeze-thaw cycles fine – the installation quality matters more than the specific paver material in most cases.
Most residential driveway projects take 3-5 days depending on size and complexity. Patio installations are usually 2-3 days for average sizes. Weather can extend timelines since we won’t install pavers in wet conditions. Commercial projects vary widely based on scope. We provide realistic timelines upfront and communicate any delays immediately. Rushing paver installation to meet arbitrary deadlines usually creates problems later.
Pavers need minimal maintenance compared to other surfaces. Occasional power washing keeps them looking fresh, and joint sand may need topping off every few years in high-traffic areas. Sealing is optional but can enhance color and provide stain protection – we recommend sealing every 3-5 years if you choose that route. Individual pavers can be replaced if damaged without affecting the surrounding area, which isn’t possible with concrete.
